Less common little tips that can make a BIG
difference:
- Give up smoking and chewing tobacco based products. Just give up completely! Ask
your dentist for help on how to get rid of this nasty habit.
- Eat a healthy balanced breakfast. Rough foods (like bran for example) can help
clean the very back of the tongue of bacteria.
- Cut down on strong flavored foods. This includes spicy foods.
- Cut down on sugary food and drinks which can lead to increasing bacteria in your
mouth.
- Reduce your alcohol intake and also drink less coffee.
- Drink plenty of fluids (water is always the best choice). This will help in
washing your mouth and keeping it cleaner. Also, it is important to drink a lot as a dry mouth can increase
bacterial buildup which can cause Halitosis (as listed in the above section). A dry mouth can also make your
bad breath worse.
- You can also chew a sugar-free gum after eating (specially meals that are rich in
protein), and/or if your mouth feels dry. This helps in saliva provision. Saliva helps in washing
away oral bacteria. It also promotes mechanical activity which aid in keeping the mouth clean, plus
it has antibacterial properties. Other things you can try to chew on include fresh parsley, cinnamon sticks and
fennel seeds-these are quite common folk remedies.
- Some foods that aid against plaque can also help to fight against bad breath. Try
these foods: Peanuts, carrots and celery.
- Basically any foods containing beta-carotene (like carrots) and vitamin C (like
tomatoes and peppers, not just oranges!) are play an important role in keeping the health of the mouth and
teeth. Another things you should want to eat are foods containing chlorophyll (which gives green
vegetables their green colour. Parsley is a good example of food high in chlorophyll), which is considered to
be detoxing, sterilizing and a great aid against bad odors.
- Traditional remedies that you should AVOID: Chewing areca-nut and betel-leaf. These come from
a South Asian costume among lovers, as bad breath is not very attractive. This can be good against bad breath,
however this has other health
risks regarding oral cancer and it is therefore not recommended!
- Green tea
and black tea can help to stop the
growth of bacteria which causes
bad breath and suppress odors.
Dentures: It is important to take your dentures out at night
so that your mouth can get the rest it needs. Dentures should be cleaned every day, twice a day. Follow the next
routine to make sure you keep your dentures fresh and clean, and avoid plaque buildup that can cause bad
breath-
Use a separate toothbrush to clean your dentures. Do not clean your
dentures with toothpaste as it can scratch them and cause stains to build up on the surface. Instead,
Clean your dentures thoroughly with soap and lukewarm water, a cream or a tablet specially designed for
dentures - cleaning.
Always use a mouth wash, and carry a sugar free chewing gum. Using
cinnamon is an effective way to mask bad breath and some tooth pastes and chewing gums will contain
cinnamon.
